In this podcast episode, Rebecca talks about small business owners’ false comfort level and reliance on Facebook Pages. She talks through the dangers of relying on third-party platforms for your marketing and communication.
Relying on Facebook Pages is a danger because:
- Facebook can shut down your page at anytime
- Facebook can discontinue the usage of Pages
- Facebook can refactor the user feed to show less activity from Pages – and they did this recently
Others of concerns and risks include:
- Facebook Groups
- Website builders
- WordPress.com
- Wix
- Weebly
- VistaPrint
- Online course creators
- Etsy storefronts
Rebecca’s suggestions for small business marketing include:
- Own your destiny and your content by building your own website on an independent CMS solution
- Review where you are spending your marketing time and money
- Ask yourself how much you control those marketing channels
- Evaluate the risk level of these channels
- Consider looking at marketing as an overall plan with many channels (website, SEO, social media, PPC, etc.)
